Special Instructions : A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test that measures the number and size of different cells in your blood. It's also known as a full blood count or blood cell count.
A CBC measures the following:
Red blood cells: Carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body
White blood cells: Fight infections and other diseases
Platelets: Help your blood to clot and stop bleeding
Hemoglobin: An iron-rich protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen
Hematocrit: The amount of whole blood that is made up of red blood cells
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV): The average size of your red blood cells
A CBC is often part of a routine checkup, but it can also be used to:
Monitor conditions or treatments that may affect your blood cell counts
Detect anemia, infection, and leukemia
Investigate symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath
Assess bleeding and trauma
A health care provider may order a CBC if you have symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, fever, weakness, bruising, or bleeding.
