What it's for

How to prepare
You can't eat or drink anything except water for 8 to 12 hours before the test. You can schedule the test early in the morning and fast overnight. Drinking water before the test can make it easier to draw blood.
What to expect
A healthcare provider will take a blood sample by pricking your finger or drawing blood from a vein in your arm. The test is very safe, and you might have a slight bruise or tenderness at the injection site that goes away quickly.
