Special Instructions : A lipid profile, also known as a lipoprotein panel, is a blood test that measures the levels of different types of lipids in your blood: Total cholesterol: The total amount of cholesterol in your blood
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: Also known as "good" cholesterol, HDL helps remove LDL from your blood
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol: Also known as "bad" cholesterol, LDL can build up in your blood vessels and increase your risk of heart disease
Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol: VLDL moves triglycerides from your liver to other cells, and can also build up in your blood vessels
Triglycerides: Another type of fat in your blood that can come from your body or from food you eat
A lipid profile can help: Predict your risk for heart disease and stroke, Detect coronary artery disease, Monitor your cholesterol level, and Monitor your body's response to treatment.
Your healthcare provider may order a lipid profile if:
You have a family history of heart disease or stroke
You are at risk for heart disease
